ABOUT TONY DRESS
Background
Tony Dress, a proud native of Concord, California, has dedicated his life to the game of baseball. His journey began on the local Little League fields of Concord American, where a lifelong passion for the sport first took root. What started as a childhood love for the game grew into a career that has carried him from neighborhood diamonds to international baseball stages across Europe and beyond.
Tony’s path has been deeply influenced by the guidance of his father, Jack Dress, and a remarkable group of mentors, including Oscar Miller, John Whitman, Jim Jones, Bill Arce, and Dennis Luquet. Their leadership and wisdom helped shape Tony’s approach to the game—grounded in discipline, integrity, and a relentless commitment to development. These influences remain central to his philosophy as both a coach and global ambassador for baseball.
Playing Experience
As a player, Tony established himself as a consistent and accomplished competitor. A graduate of Concord High School, he earned three consecutive Varsity Baseball All-League honorable mentions as a first baseman. He continued his success at Los Medanos Junior College, receiving another All-League honorable mention before transferring to Chico State.
Tony’s collegiate career culminated in an exceptional senior season in 1993, when he was named Most Valuable Player and Most Outstanding Hitter. His playing résumé also includes international experience, as he represented Major League Baseball International’s Envoy Team in 1992, spending two months competing and promoting the game in Czechoslovakia.
Coaching Experience
Tony Dress’s coaching career reflects the same passion and excellence that defined his playing days. He currently serves as an assistant coach at Diablo Valley College, where he specializes in offensive development and hitting instruction.
His coaching journey began with a transformative tenure at Acalanes High School in Lafayette, California, where he rebuilt the program into a winning team within 18 months. Tony later led Los Medanos Junior College to a historic 28–16 season, highlighted by the program’s first home playoff game in years.
At the collegiate level, Tony served as head coach of the San Francisco State Gators Baseball Program, guiding multiple players to All-CCAA honors. He also contributed as a Volunteer Assistant Coach at St. Mary’s College during the 2012 and 2013 seasons, focusing on offensive development and player growth. Across every stop, Tony has been recognized for his ability to connect with athletes and maximize their potential.
International Baseball Leadership
Tony’s impact on the game extends far beyond the United States. From 1992 to 1996, he served as a Regional Game Development Coordinator for Major League Baseball International, working extensively throughout Europe and internationally, including Czechoslovakia, Spain, Norway, Germany, Sweden, Australia, and New Zealand. His work included organizing coaching clinics, developing national programs, and creating opportunities for players and coaches at all levels.
One of his most significant accomplishments was helping establish Norway’s first National Baseball Team. He also designed credentialing programs and secured sponsorships for the International Baseball Federation. For more than 20 years, Tony has remained a trusted consultant to the Norwegian Softball and Baseball Federation, continuing to influence the growth of the sport internationally.
